BORDEAUX

A lush pointillist novel, first published in 1986 by an eminent Spanish writer who deftly analyzes the experiences and emotions of three people attracted to, and transformed by, living in France's verdant wine country. ""Pauline"" is an elderly woman tugged back into life by her involvement in a younger woman's unhappy love affair. ""Entre-Deux-Mers"" shows how a boy abandoned by his mother grows into a man unable to sustain loving relationships. And ""The Capitals of the World"" observes with Jamesian precision an American divorcÆ’e whom ""love or the search for love"" transforms into a perpetual traveler. Superb psychological portraiture, in a particularly graceful English translation.
