THE CHIPPEWA INDIANS

Another in Sonia Bleeker's series of tribal portraits takes the Chippewa Indians of the southwestern Great Lakes district through history and through the physical and spiritual activities that characterize them. An agricultural and hunting tribe, the Chippewas came from the east to settle where the Crane held conference with the Loon. The central family in the story is of the Crane clan and as they go their seasonal rounds-harvesting wild rice, hunting, making canoes and other articles, and searching for power through visions- their lives and habitat are understandably described.
