FERGUSON JENKINS: The Quiet Winner

An anemic mound appearance-by-mound appearance profile of that ""almost unnoticed winner"" Ferguson Jenkins--only the fourth major league pitcher in the last fifty years to win twenty games for six consecutive seasons. An all-around athlete in his native Chatham, Canada, Jenkins began as a relief pitcher in the Phillies' organization before being traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1966. Fergie soon developed into a Windy City starter and their most reliable hurler. A remarkably consistent performer, he was often overlooked as the mainstay of the Cubs pitching staff until his selection as the 1971 Cy Young Award winner. Traded to the Texas Rangers last season, Jenkins won 25 games as he turned a last-place team into contenders. The subject--""a quiet winner, always picking up the marbles for his team""--surely deserves more than a three-inning jobbie.
