An all-around athlete in his native Chatham, Canada, Jenkins began as a relief pitcher in the Phillies' organization before being traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1966. Fergie soon developed into a Windy City starter and their most reliable hurler. A remarkably consistent performer, he was often overlooked as the mainstay of the Cubs pitching staff until his selection as the 1971 Cy Young Award winner. Traded to the Texas Rangers last season, Jenkins won 25 games as he turned a last-place team into contenders.
