An odd little crew runs Braseley Hall Adult College, now on summer vacation. Warden Hugo Growne, full of pretensions, with a lifetime of second-class jobs behind him, finds Braseley an earthly paradise--as does his colorless, adoring wife Esther. Staff member Lionel Ferris is happy there too, communing with nature, carrying on platonic infatuations. But Ferris' newest sweetie--statuesque, blond librarian June Grant--is stirring up trouble galore: she spreads nasty innuendos (about Browne, about her assistants); she enrages Ferris' worldly wife Clare, who longs for London. So it's no big surprise when June turns up dead--a swimming-pool fall And Inspector Furnival realizes that the fall was no accident and slogs through (with intuitive flashes) to a satisfying solution. Clever character studies, lively storytelling, and an attractive, intellectual inspector: a solid, pleasing police-procedural.
