EMBERS OF DEATH

Seven suspicious fires, and the Nottingham CID still doesn't have a single suspect. But the eighth, at the Furlong End Pharmacy, provides an embarrassment of riches. Was the blaze that hid owner Robert McPherson's murder (he'd already been killed by a curare-based injection) set by his widow and insurance beneficiary, or by the former assistant he'd dismissed, or by the dispensary-form thief he'd caught, or by the present boss of both the assistant and the thief--an unsavory off-market drug supplier whose blandishments he'd been resisting? Or, as Inspector Richard Montgomery and his sidekick Sgt. William Bird wonder, was it set by McPherson himself, who left another body to burn in his place? Shepherd's seventh (Nurse Dawes Is Dead, 1995, etc.) is as swift-moving, as full of sharp-featured characters, and as neatly solved as all her others.
