LIONEL IN THE FALL

No, this isn't an easy version of Paradise Lost, just four episodes in the life of the young boy introduced in Lionel at Large. It's the first day of school, and Lionel is surprised and pleased to find out how much he's changed since last year; later, he is asked to stand up and talk about himself in class, something he detests, and later still he convinces his friend Jeffrey to help him rake leaves. Finally, on Halloween, he dresses as a knight and charges out (Dad goes along as horse)--never quite catching up with a dragon who's also out trick-or-treating, until he gets home and discovers that it was his sister Louise. We leave them gleefully chasing one another through the house. Natti's bright watercolors echo the cheerfully relaxed tone; Lionel and his multiethnic neighbors generally bear happy expressions and live in a neat, well-kept suburban environment. All in all: small adventures, pleasant reading.
