THE MOUSES' TERRIBLE HALLOWEEN

Most of us found The Mouses' Terrible Christmas (1978) a pretty terrible Christmas book. This Halloween story in the same vein of disaster humor has the mouse family Dad going out after a pumpkin in his burglar costume and being chased home by vigilante villagers. Then he finds that he's grabbed a giant potato by mistake. Later the costumed mouse family barges into an orange flying saucer which they take for a house decorated for a Halloween party. Their wild entrance impels the invading space mice to dump them and retreat, and the family ends up at the real Halloween party unaware that they've had an adventure. The demand for Halloween books might be fierce, but the mouse family's mishaps haven't a trace of zest or black magic.
