THE BLOCK BOOK

In sprightly verse by a Broadway lyricist, here's a childlike nonsense story about a couple of blocks, Betsy and Ben, who have compiled their own cozy but overcrowded home out of ""good junk""--some of which they use to build a new house for a neighbor after his burns down. Mather, whose vibrant, lucid art has been a pleasure as well as a critical success since Maria Theresa (1985), fills this appropriately small, square book with imaginative detail--unusual and decorative uses for the blocks' junk, intriguing labels (""First & Last Aid""), comic juxtapositions. Slight, perhaps, but deft and charming.
