MRS. BARTHELME'S MADNESS

Is she or isn't she? Does she or doesn't she. . . make up all those things--that she ran over a child even if no one ever found the body? that she sees masked figures in the woods, only to discover the same masks in an old picture? that she's being monitored by her older children and their two freaky friends who place a low premium on human life, including her new baby's? that nobody believes her, certainly not her absentee husband, or the shrink he picked out for her, or especially Sam, a police lieutenant who makes love to her but leaves her with no assurances of any kind. This is much better written than Claudia's first book, Clock and Bell (1974) and it's a more than literal run-around for all concerned including the reader. Are you or are you not sure what happens-happened? No, only that you'll read it.
