THE MAN WITH THE BUSHY BEARD and Other Tales

Five noodlehead stories of pinhead size spread over thirty-two spacious pages. None gains except in suspense by being drawn out and some lose plausibility: the lobster who wins a race with the fox by clinging to his tail is pictured larger than the fox initially, which is not only inaccurate but also raises the question of how he could hang on without being felt. Numbers three and four turn on very similar jokes--the mother who threatens her disobedient son with ""if you drown don't you dare come home,"" the driver who dismisses his drowning horse with ""if I had caught you I was going to give you a terrible beating."" The figures are large and vapid, and altogether the material doesn't stand up under such magnification.
