You're not into this three generation novel very long before you read, ""Ruth's laughter is pleasant: like the sound of a fingertip as it is pulled across the strings of a well-tuned harp,"" and you know it's going to be even worse than you suspected. We are given the romantic stories of three women beginning in 1877, running up to 1920, set in the island city of Galveston. There is the chief evil-doer, Claire, whose small-time machinations would make the Dragon Lady seem like an altruist; Serena, illegitimate child of Claire's husband and her cousin, Ruth, who falls in love one summer with a trumpet player; and Willa, Serena's own illegitimate child. None of the problems of these characters has very much to do with their location or with their times though there are passing references to a high-buttoned shoe, the installation of a telephone, something about Cuba, along with the author's dutiful insertion of certain natural disasters--storms, fires--which occurred on the scene. All of which might just as well have taken place in Yonkers.
