LITTLE PIG AND THE BLUE-GREEN SEA

A young pig's adventures on the high seas will make an agreeable story hour filler. An unsuspecting pig enjoys the sea breezes on a boat going to market, but he escapes from the former and stows away on an ocean liner. Here he is almost cooked for dinner until his squeals alert the sailors that a woman has fallen overboard. The drama of the story is undermined by the appearance of the captain (he just happens to love pigs), who adopts the pig as a pet while the woman's rescue appears to be an afterthought. Despite this weakness, the story's excitement and satisfying conclusion should appeal to pre-schoolers. The softly shaded watercolor illustrations executed in sea-side greens, blues, and sand-colored tones offer interesting perspectives.
