LITTLE MOUSE'S BIG VALENTINE

In an excess of creative enthusiasm, Little Mouse makes a valentine so enormous that no one wants it. Chagrined, he sets out on a journey--during which the giant valentine becomes a boat and a glider as well as a burden. Eventually, he meets Gloria, another little mouse, who offers to help him carry his huge red heart and, in the end, to find an appropriate way to share it. This beguiling fable is both told and illustrated with disarming simplicity; Hurd's minimal lines are deftly expressive of his hero's subtle feelings, while his rich, watercolor tones make each page a delight. A splendid addition to the Valentine's Day shelf.
