HANS IN LUCK

The short (one line per page), uncomplicated joke-tale about simple Hans, on his way home from seven years' labor, who trades the bag of gold he's received in wages for a horse, then trades the horse for a cow, cow for a pig, pig for a goose and goose for a grindstone--then counts himself lucky to be rid of his burden when the stone falls into a well. Hans leaves you wondering whether he is the fool you took him for after all, and Hoffmann's animals do indeed seem to grow more appealing as he keeps trading down (though the pig is really the prize of them all). And if these warm, wonderfully economical illustrations lack the ingenious detail that made Tom Thumb (KR, 1973) so much fun, their clean, spare look of artless, mellow rusticity are perfect for the occasion.
