ON GRANDDADDY'S FARM

The author tells how, years ago, he and his cousins summered at a Tennessee farm where they helped with the chores, went swimming in the local hole, and stayed with Granny while Granddaddy went off for his four. day stints on the railroad. The large format and soft illustrations in muted tones have the evocative appeal of Allen's muchpraised illustrations for In Coal Country (1987), providing a nostalgic frame for the tender portrait of Granddaddy himself attending church, rendered in glowing detail. There are a couple of careless details--a mule is shown with a horse's tail, and by some alchemy the hay that was loaded loose in the field turns up baled in the barn--but, overall, a positively presented, authentic bit of Americana.
