First novelist Houghton's First Season deals with that of Austrian Leon Steiger who becomes a winner on the slopes, but is ultimately a loser since he turns his back on his family--on Gretchen, the girl he grew up with in a simple mountain village. Instead there's Minda Sawyer, American, rich, available, who ""plays at being a full time bitch"" (her father) ultimately is in part responsible for the accident which leaves him with nothing after a fast tour of the circuit--Chamonix, Davos, Kitzbuhel, etc. A little schmerz, more action, this dissolves almost as fast as powder snow. It hasn't quite the glossy mystique of Gary's Ski Bum but that's a partial audience.
