This memorial to the men who founded and staffed a great hospital during its growth through a hundred years is in part, too, a memorial to the advance of medicine. In describing the development of Mount Sinai, originally the Jews' Hospital but since the Civil War nonsectarian, the authors tell of hardworking men with a social conscience, of hardworking doctors whose research has included the perfecting of blood transfusion techniques, the present cure for syphilis, etc... Here are documented the beginnings of the nursing profession, of neurology and psychiatric treatment; and with the hospital, its surroundings -- New York, with its changing populace, and the nation, with work during the wars, are fitted into the picture. Always growing, the hospital's latest project is a unit in a housing development in the future. The staff and donors to the hospital are listed.
