I found the chapters on places I had not visited more interesting than on places I had visited, in which I felt he had missed essentials, was sketchy, impressionistic, lacking in sensitiveness to atmosphere (or ability to convey it). A good deal of practical information about things to do and places to stay, but too much about things to drink and where to drink them. Would suggest it as a book for people planning that trip, and completely unfamiliar with places indicated. Supplement with Crossroads of the Buccaneers for fuller background and atmosphere, history and legend. Don't sell for armchair retrospective reading, or for fireside travellers.
