A lilting comic song about what ensues when Engelbert, by some oversight, gets an invitation to the queen's ball is brought delightfully to life in swirling, beautifully designed, uproariously funny illustrations. Engelbert, taking his invitation seriously, learns to dance and is on his best behavior; after a chilly reception from the queen's guards, and some initial mayhem when the other guests panic, the elephant's graceful cavorting (on one unlaced sneaker and one roller-skate) wins all hearts. In a grand finale, the human guests escort Engelbert back to the forest, where they dance and frolic with the other animals. A touch of pathos gives Kellogg's usual buoyant wit extra charm here, while such details as a pair of mice who come along on the elephant's hat add to the splendid fun. Music not included.
