For some time the publisher has been adding to this series, and we think the time is ripe for another glance. Obviously, portraits of our states should be of value in schools, libraries, and the home, as the family moves from state to state or acquires acquaintances in different states. The content is in general comprehensive although, as in the case of many geography books, too much is covered at once -- history, topography, ""principal industries"" (remember?), and famous names and places; also the style is dusty with chalk and blackboards -- phrases like ""hostile"", ""springtime splendor"", ""provide excellent harbors"" and those two old favorites ""rolling acres"" and ""natural riches"", are hardly tempting to the young reader. However, the illustrations by Kurt Wiese, although indifferently reproduced and blatantly literal, help, and the format is interesting. Good idea -- let's hope for a fresher approach in text.
