Not a book intended for the small garden and individual grower, but for the agriculturist who plans to have a vineyard of substantial proportions -- for the commercial grower -- for the potential beginner who wants to grow grapes for wine. Technical information as to cultivation and propagation of grapes, climactic conditions, sites, soil, the necessary qualifications for planning and planting a vineyard, its care, its enemies (insects, disease, etc.), pruning, and finally vintage. Practical data as to varieties, cost, with charts of breakdown -- original cost -- labor cost -- etc. The section on the treatment of diseases, pests, fungi, and so on seems to an amateur to have one grave lack -- there is no mention of the Japanese beetle which wrecks havoc on the home vineyards I know most about! The section on vintage deals not only with instructions for home winery, care of new wines, and so on, but the etiquette of service, and the use of wine in cooking.
