Against these jaded trappings of royalty the story is told of Lord Deverly, wounded at Culloden, devoting his life to the Stuart cause; of his adopted ""nieces"", subject of gossip and curious speculation, and particularly of the icy beauty, Shurensi, her passionate pursuit of revenge-against the violent youthful Lucifer, Count Alfieri, whose snobbish rejection of her love threw her into the clutches of the sadistic Winterset, her other victim. A novel of high intrigue, elaborated with all the trappings, of a period that struck new lows of depravity and bestiality. I for one- found it surfeiting.
