CROWN WITHOUT SCEPTRE

The ""Young Pretender"", Charles Edward, and his phony court in Italy, provide background for the title of this new romantic novel, set in England and in Italy in the years leading to the final abortive attempt to restore the Stuarts to the throne of England, Scotland, Ireland. Against these jaded trappings of royalty the story is told of Lord Deverly, wounded at Culloden, devoting his life to the Stuart cause; of his adopted ""nieces"", subject of gossip and curious speculation, and particularly of the icy beauty, Shurensi, her passionate pursuit of revenge-against the violent youthful Lucifer, Count Alfieri, whose snobbish rejection of her love threw her into the clutches of the sadistic Winterset, her other victim. A novel of high intrigue, elaborated with all the trappings, of a period that struck new lows of depravity and bestiality. I for one- found it surfeiting.
