FATAL AFFAIR

Johnston winds up her humdrum good people vs. the baddies for a neatly plotted romantic suspenser that bears some resemblance to the identity-switcheroo plot of The Other Karen (1983). Here, the much more imperiled victim is would-be dancer Betsy Carr, Missouri-bred, who, having squandered all her inheritance to make it in New York, is a ripe plum for unscrupulous cousin Colin and his partner--a glamorous rat named Tony, who promises marriage. The busy pair lure Betsy first to London, then to Paris and finally to a hideaway in Scotland, where a certain nasty operation is to take place before she can be passed off as a millionaire's long-lost granddaughter. Elder sister Jenny Carr, truly from Missouri, aided by soon-to-be lover, the upright and ""heavy-lidded"" London journalist Michael Baker, do the snooping and, at the close, the stake-out and move-in. Dull people--but the seasoned suspense could keep one's own heavy lids from snapping shut.
