A CABIN FOR THE NARY CHRISTMAS

A Christmas adventure for the Brices of Sudden Voyage (1954, p. 681) starts when Mark, Nora and Toby go from New York to spend the holidays with friends at Kewanaka Bay on Long Island. The elements that make their vacation doubly interesting, are two: Mark, who wants to be a marine architect, designs a cabin for the Thurston's boat so their paralytic daughter can go sailing; and the family of Joel Fleet, a maladjusted contemporary of Toby's, is persuaded to give Joel an operation that will cure a disfiguration that has contributed to the boy's chip. These accomplishments, amidst seasonal cheer and a rapid fire of conversation that puts people in bold relief, are good reading.
