THE RUNAWAYS

The sunshine saga of Smiler, a resilient urchin of 15 on the lam from an unjust sentence in reform school, and the cheetah, Yarra, similarly sprung from the Marquis of Bath's sanctuary. Smiler discreetly establishes himself in the barn of an absent Major Collingwood, takes a job as a kennel boy in a small town, is mothered by the two kennel ladies and befriended by an avuncular poacher. While the Major dogs the mystery of his erstwhile tenant, Yarra delivers cubs on an Army Range, blooms on a rabbit diet but is finally done in by an angry bull. Smiler, also about to be nipped in the Major's trap, discovers the cubs, delivers them back to Yarra's preserve and then blasts off to engage in other adventures which are promised. Chaste as a marshmallow.
