ALFRED'S ALPHABET WALK

Instead of a Gaggle of Geese, Chess conjures up a Group of Gray Gorillas; and as might be expected, the alphabetically ordered animals that Alfred encounters on his all-day walk include a share of night creatures (Brown Bats hanging Bottoms up; some Odd Old Owls), forbidding giants (besides the gorillas there's a Dreadful Dog, and a Lazy Lion whom Alfred creeps past), and toothy carnivores (two Ancient Alligators) along with the Herd of Hungry Hogs and the Rabbits playing Ring-around-the-Rosy. But Alfred (an odd, hairy little creature himself) goes blithely on, calling hello to some absurd-looking Curious Cats who sit by the water Catching Crabs, chatting with a Venomous Viper who offers him some Violets, and Walking arm in arm with a Wolf and a Wolverine--until at nightfall a Zebra and a Zora chase him home to his mother, who started it all by sending him outside to study his alphabet book. Just as Alfred makes the best of his assignment, Chess brings some bite and originality to the alphabet book genre, without turning it into an overingenious ego trip.
