ONE WEEK IN MARCH

This is the week which began- in the United States- with Franklin D. Roosevelt's inaugural and the day the money stopped-and in Europe, 24 hours later, with Hitler's revolution and victory march. With the official closing of the banks (there had been earlier, sporadic ""holidays"" in certain cities), the country found itself penny-poor (even John D. Rockefeller didn't have a dime), scrip was printed in many places, and singular situations resulted. Even so- they do not afford a full-length book, and so, in a pattern all too familiar by now, the authors have reworked the news of the day to document The Year:- the shows on Broadway, books published, radio, films, art, science and medicine, and leading headlines from a Denver kidnapping to the Scottsboro case. Definitely a kind of non-book which leads off from a particular predicament to a precis- in review- and it is workmanlike if nothing else.
