THREE RUSSIAN POETS

Pushkin, Lermontov, Tyutchev, three of Russia's most justly famous poets, are now made available to all interested in Russian works in translation, for which there is an ever widening public. Although little can be said for the poetic or even technical quality of these translations, they do serve to give a glimpse of the majesty of Russian poetry. One samples here its primitive epic strength and savagery, and also its mournful lyric quality. What seems most lacking in this slight sample is any touch of the Russian gift for vivid and colorful playfulness and fantasy.
