Not by any means as lively, or is it deadly, as Hejinian's Extreme Remedies to follow -- this is a straight medical center procedural and it's not too difficult to take a stat from E.R. to O.R. All of it told in alternating first persons whether they be those of ambulance driver Frank Baker, or orderly Arnold Henker, or head of the Emergency Room Thomas Hunter, or neuro resident, or that arrogant intern Stern whom you should never consult. And there are the cases -- an elderly admission who commits suicide; or a black youngster who's a hit and run casualty; or a former jockey and alcoholic who shoots himself, etc. No central narrative, a certain amount of detritus which in regular parlance means filler, and a sustaining continuity which could easily be subdivided in much the same serial fashion as we are used to looking at and listening to as we follow that man in the white scrub suit. With lair plus interest.
