THE ROAD OF THE CROWD

W. R. Burnett has taken down this reminiscence-record book of baseball through the years and it is a very pleasant season's opener, full of educated savvy, affection and respect. His old timer discusses all kinds of players; umpires; managers; the pushbutton rule of thumb; the sportswriter (the average fan knows more); Lardner- the ""Shakespeare of baseball,""; bonuses; slumps, as well as some of the classic remarks which have been made. Along with the illustrations by Russell Hoban and the introduction by Frisch, this should go right down the middle, to the man at home plate and any youngster who has traded in his bubble gum cards.
