AWAKE! And Other Wartime Poems

This collection has met tremendous success in England, and Rodgers has been heralded as ""this war's Rupert Brooke"". Mark Van Doren hails him as ""The war poet of this war"". We found it effective work, typical of the modern generation at war, with none of the sentiment, the idealism of Brooke. It is idiomatic, in thought, feeling, expression. Grim, terse, critical of the old, pre-war world, aware of change, and of ""a levelled world waiting to be made new"". Most of the poems are wartime poems, Christmas, love, music, refugees -- against gunfire.
