CENTRAL AND FLEXIBLE STAGING

This examination and recommendation of arena play production will be of particular interest to little theaters, small community groups and others who have the question of inexpensive staging, lack of funds for their own conventional theater and the desire to experiment with various types of plays. For here the virtues of end staging, horseshoe and other uses of the open stage are reviewed from the accumulated ideas and experiences of actual performance; descriptions of how to make, how to adapt the space available precede the choice of plays, floor plans, properties, scenery and set pieces, lighting, costumes and makeup, acting and director's planning and handling of a production. Plays suggested are listed according to number of sets and actors; dependable procedures for audience seating, entrances and exits, types of color, etc., etc., are examined so that acting groups may make the most of economical staging. Should be a good study and practice book for interested organizations.
