BREAKAWAY

A fast run through unchartered territory tails Joe Vain, ne Vanderham, who had signed up with a wildcat airline after the war-operating out of Moresby, Australia, and engaged in an illegal traffic of gold bullion, jewels and narcotics. On the ground (or more accurately- down to earth) there's Let, an indochinese girl in Saigon, and Ramona, of patrician parentage, in Manila. As the tension tells- of these flights in an old DC-3, of the edgy relationship between two Polish pilots and a German, of the surveillance of customs agents, Joe thinks of a breakaway back to the States. His last flight, in a defective plane, through an impossible cold front, lands him in Tokyo- exhausted and ill, but he is forced to fly out again, and ultimately reaches Manila where Ramona nurses him back to health, wins his love... An adventure story which relies on some strongly developed elements of risk and romance, this offers exciting entertainment at a popular level.
