THROUGH THE LOCKS

The author-artist of the excellent Ships and Life Afloat (Scribner) gives a lucid explanation of the building and mechanisms of many of the world's great canal systems- a subject with timeless fascination for young and old. Chapter one, on how canals and locks work, leaves little unsaid in its material on levels, locks, pumping etc. The next is a step by step description of going through Panama Canal. And among canals in North America, there is the bygone romance of the Eric and the modern technical achievements of such as the Soo and the Welland.
