by Walter J. Ong ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 1, 1967
These essays, all of which have been reprinted from various sources, comprise a sequel to the author's (successful) The Barbarian Within, and, like that predecessor volume, they have to do with aspects of the human condition viewed particularly from the literary, technological, and religious viewpoints. Father Ong's view is that Christianity is closely tied to the evolution of the material world, and it is within that context that he discusses such matters as the knowledge explosion in the humanities, the break-through in communications, evolution, and American culture and morality. Father Ong writes for the intelligent layman, and his style does justice to his intelligence, wit, and perception. In The Human Grain is that rarissima avis among collections: a readable analysis-cum-synthesis of a difficult and complex subject.
