LORD OF THE MOUNTAIN

Irish novelist Macken does a variation on Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge in the story of a wild young Irish lad, forced into marriage, who runs away on his wedding night and does not return for sixteen years. He comes home, by coincidence, on the day his father dies and takes over the rule of the house, his father's business, and the support of his embittered wife and retarded daughter. Similarly retarded is the mountainside village where they live and, in modernising it, he becomes lord of the mountain or unofficial mayor, and regains the love of his wife and respect.... Macken has an expert way with the tightminded villagers and their stoical dialogue; the story moves although the return of this native seldom has the brooding grandeur of Egdon Heath.
