THE UNITED STATES IN VIETNAM

The outpouring of books on this subject has become too vast and too rapid for even the most dedicated reader to keep up, or for as thorough and helpful a bibliography as the one included here to be anything more than indicative. Nevertheless, here is another to add to the must list. There are several good reasons why, the simplest of which is the appendices; basic documents such as the Geneva Agreements are there complete, and the emphasis otherwise is on hard-to-find materials, especially those relating to the National Liberation Front. A larger reason is that these authors--Professor and Associate Professor respectively of Government at Cornell--are two of the most outspoken scholarly American critics to date of U.S. policy in Vietnam. The kind of ""social surgery"" we are engaged in there, they maintain, can only result in the patient dying on the operation table. Whether or not theirs is the ""definitive statement,"" as their publishers claim, it certainly offers a solid, comprehensive history.
