ONCE AGAINST THE LAW

Writers Tenn (science fiction) and Westlake (crime, plus) collaborate as editors predicating their collection on the fact that a ""story is action and violence is action in its extreme form and murder is violence in its extreme' form"" although these do not necessarily exemplify the latter. In extremis, then enjoy some 26 pieces of which the poetry inclusions, Chaucer's Pardoner's Tale and Browning's Last Duchess and Wilde's Ballad are certainly the most familiar; other older performers include Tolstoi and Balzac and Scott; moderns, preponderantly, Borges, Moravia, Ustinov, Gold, Steinbeck, coates and Rebecca West. And Nash and Perelman and Thurber....Unexpected choices, on the whole, from relatively unexpected writers in this area.
