THE STORY OF THE PACIFIC; THE PACIFIC OCEAN

Briefly, the Van Loon is the more dramatic, the more colorful, but not a consistent chronological record. Rather is it a collection of bits of lore and legend, dramatic personalities, thrilling episodes in exploration and travel and colonization. The Riesenberg fills in the gaps, fits the personalities into their niches, historically, and gives both history and biography more of the flavor of the navigator. Read them both.
