The first appearance of a well-known Swedish novelist in America, in this backward glance over childhood years. Knut, a well established editor in Stockholm finds himself deadlocked at 35, stifled by the routine, the materialism of the city, unable to reconcile soil and asphalt. He turns to the past, to his country childhood and with great simplicity and charm reviews the years. An interesting piece of characterization in this portrait of a boy, sensitive, defiant, afraid, cowed by the narrow discipline of both home and school, local superstitions and taboos. Adolescence, first love, and final emancipation to the life and work he had always wanted, with books, only to find the past in conflict with the present. Not the spaciousness or vigor of the peasant scene one finds in Hamsun or Undset, but greater delicacy and considerable insight.
