The memoirs of a painter, nostalgic and appreciative, with an old world quality of restraint and breeding. His book deals mainly with his friends who were many and distinguished, poets and painters and writers. Of the four score and more Rothenstein knew, one meets most frequently Housman, Beerbohm, T. E. Lawrence, Tagore, Gosse, Yeats and Ramsay MacDonald, though Kipling, Hardy, Sargent, Moore, A. E. and Shaw appear from time to time. The book lacks the pungency of Lavery's book, Life Of a Painter, but it is warm and informal and there's nice personal material on many artists of the day just gone by, their aesthetic credo, comments on painting, on literature, as well as those of the author.
