MOON STORIES

Three lively tales of diverse origin, collected in a picture book format and illustrated with Wiesner's animated comic style figures against a bright blue sky. ""Star Cookies,"" from India via Czechoslovakia, tells how the Sun was banished for stuffing himself with the North Wind's star-shaped cookies and the Moon rewarded for giving half of her share to adorn her mother, the Sky. In a ""silly tale"" from Persia, ""The Tidy King"" climbs a tower of boxes in an attempt to wash the moon, and ""The Elephant on the Moon"" (""based on an actual occurrence in 17th-century England, about which Samuel Butler composed a satirical poem"") turns out to be the astronomer's assistant's mouse, trapped behind the telescope lens. A handy filler.
