A naval reserve officer who had preferred life in the Philippines for twenty years, Chick Parsons returned to the Japanese-occupied islands to bring the aid that MacArthur had promised. Parsons ferreted out and consolidated guerrilla power, set up a shore patrol, and encouraged resistance against the Japanese. For more than a year he coordinated the supply line from subs to native soldiers despite personal danger--there was a $50,000 price on his head because he had previously escaped in disguise, carrying forbidden printed matter. The ""Spy (Squad)ron"" played an important part in preparing for the decisive battle at Leyte. Without pretending that Parsons had the only role, the author shows the hero to deserved advantage, using dialogue to add information and keeping jargon (e.g., ""Nips"") to a minimum. Effective if not exciting, and certainly not essential.
