THE FLORENTINE GIRAFFE: A Tale of the Italian Renaissance

A cast fit for a melodrama--crippled sister, widowed mother, malicious villain, friendly foreigner, wise monarch--is fitted into the year 1487 in Lorenzo de Medici's Florence. Living on the Ponte Vecchio with his sister Tessa and their mother is kind-hearted, animal-adoring Guido Torino, fourteen, whose dearest wish is to be a zoo-keeper for Lorenzo. Given his choice of demands as reward for a daring exploit which saved the ruler's beloved giraffe, he Suppresses his own wish in order to make Tessa Queen of Beauty at the May festival, gets his desire anyway on his own merits. A fine Renaissance atmosphere permeates an otherwise too-sentimental, not-too-believable, all-too-ordinary story.
