North Canada and the beginnings of the Hudson's Bay Company in the years between 1667 and 1672. Valuable for the adventurously colorful knitting together of accurate nature descriptions, historical fact and a little of the human emotions that made the happenings, this is the story of Michael Windfield who was given the chance by Prince Rupert to join the Company of Adventures of England Trading into Hudson's Bay -- to bring back beaver pelts for the King's whims and to hunt for the Northwest Passage. The temper of the times is shown well through young Michael's friendship and instruction from the great Coureur des bois, des Groseilliers, who knew practically all there was to know about hunting, Indians, fur trading and pulling some necessary wool over eyes. There is a satisfying sense of accomplishment for the new Canada as the first ship is built on Hudson's Bay and the party sails home to England.
