This is Yael Dayan's second book. Though Nimrod is no more acceptable as a whole person than was Ariel in the earlier book, at least one senses hope at the end, and understanding- if not compassion- as one follows the molding of the man from the boy. This is the story of a small sensitive boy who is made to feel that he must show no fear, feel no fear, by a father who wants him to be completely the new Sabra. He becomes the symbol of The Rock, (his nickname) defeating fear, and with it tenderness, the capacity for love, and the sensitivity that had been his in large measure. Yael Dayan successfully imparts a sense of the new Israel and something of the deep-rooted determination that dominates its people.
