Three unusual, not to say weird, long stories by one of Japan's most accomplished younger writers: a surrealist with a funky, abrasive sense of humor. The title story (winner of a 1993 Akutagawa Prize) conjoins its narrator's fablelike tale of an interspecies marriage with her own entrapment in an amusingly similar relationship. ""Missing Reels"" is a variant of that plot, but ""The Gotthard Railway"" explores a young woman's love of tunnels in hair-raisingly symbolic and erotic dimensions, extending to a rude (and quite funny) reimagining of Dante's Inferno. Sophisticated mischief-making, and the work of a most unusual talent.
