UPON THIS CONTINENT

A poetic-prose history of the United States made up of records, letters, public documents, and the musings of the author. In this swift glance at our evolution, the author pauses for comment, printed in italics, which links the events as they unroll, the lives of individuals. One question always is asked-""What do we seek?"" as the pattern of America is followed from the Zuni myths, the Indians, the explorers, pilgrims and planters, to the governors, the merchants, the colonials, the rebels, and then the revolutionaries. The new nation turns westward, and there is the fight for their creed of Union; the promoters come, and then the vast army of workers, both men and women, and the internationalistic era is reached. Excerpts from the writings of Washington, Lincoln, Thoreau, Whitman and others rub elbow with those of the unknown, the unsung. Americana, with a general appeal, though it may not reach a general audience.
