KIRKUS REVIEW

Sixty-seven stories -- and what a collection. Taken as a unit, they would serve as rich student material in the history of the American short story. Taken separately, they range from the fairly obvious, such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Pit and the Pendulum, A New England Nun, The Bar Sinister, Big Blonde, The Killers -- to material almost impossible to find, and yet representative of the best writing that has been done by such authors as Ambrose Bierce, Gertrude Atherton, Stephen Crane, Katherine Fullerton Gerould, Christopher Morley, Thomas Wolfe, Erskine Caldwell, and many others. The book will be distributed by the Book-of-the-Month -- but should in addition be an essential item for any library, public or private -- and required reading for all writing courses!
