KIRKUS REVIEW

The dossier, in rather formidable detail, on the huge criminal cartel and its affiliated hookups in every city which has controlled crime (but evaded the law) since the `20's and which has accounted for some 1000 murders up to 1940. Turkus, the former assistant D.A. who sent seven of the members of Murder, Inc., to the chair, writes on the basis of a direct investigation and prosecution, blueprints the whole organization and its operations which extended from racetracks, narcotics, gambling to murder. Here are punks and hoodlums and killers; the crime czars Lepke, Capone, Legs Diamond, Joey Adonis, Lucky Luciano, Buggay Siegel, Dutch Schultz and Anastasia; their women- and of course Virginia Hill; and the chain of criminal investigation from police dragnets to court testimony and trial which flared into headline furor with the Kefauver Committee....A full folio, for the more determined addict.
